Ingredients for Sugar Cookies
- Butter: Use unsweetened butter that is slightly warm but not greasy—just soft enough to be workable. Sugar: Just put a spoonful of white sugar that is granulated into your measuring cup and use a knife, spatula or bench scraper to level it off.
- Eggs: Use large eggs that are cold or room temperature.
- Vanilla extract: Real vanilla extract tastes better than counterfeit vanilla.
- All-purpose flour should be used. It can be either sifted in the bag or the container before being measured using the cup and then smoothed flat using the back of the spoon. Do not compact the flour in the measuring cup because it will lead to the incorrect proportion of cookies, which makes them tough and dry.
- Baking powder: A leavening agent, baking powder aids in the cookie dough’s rise whereas baking.
- Salt: For this recipe, use normal table salt.
Methods for Baking Sugar Cookies
It takes more than just throwing something in the oven to bake something well. To start with, there’s the weather. Every oven heats up differently. Because of this, we always advise using an oven thermometer to check the actual temperature before you begin baking. Then there are the extremely hot patches from the oven. It’s a good idea to switch out your pan midway through the baking period to ensure that your cookies—or any other baked goods—bake evenly.
Snickerdoodles with Store-Bought Sugar Cookie Dough
Of all my store-bought sugar cookie dough hacks, this one is the simplest by far. Using a measuring cup, break off pieces of sugar cookie dough and roll in equal amounts of cinnamon and sugar. Using a jar, flatten, and bake according to the recipe. They are the ideal simple snickerdoodle cookie—soft and chewy.
Cranberry Orange Cookies
My cranberry orange sugar cookies are the second easiest of my store-bought sugar cookie dough tricks. These are a fancier cookie to wow your friends at your next cookie exchange, and they always make an impression on my guests. One orange zest, 1/4 cup dried cranberries, and a small amount of orange extract are required. Although optional, the extract truly provides these a delicious burst of orange flavour. Roll them out, press them flat, and then bake them as the package instructs.
Sprinkle Rolled Sugar Cookies
Here’s another super simple way to use store-bought sugar cookie dough. Scatter a large amount of sprinkles onto a baking sheet that has been lined. Roll your log of cookie dough in the sprinkles, cut, and bake according to the recipe. You can use jell food colouring to add more colour. However, be advised that the jell food colouring may leave stains on your hands. We call these rainbow cookies, and my girls adore them.
Stained Sugar Cookies in Glass
This is, to be honest, my more involved method for working with store-bought sugar cookie dough. To make the dough for the stained glass sugar cookies, add 1/4 cup flour. Form into a log, cut out the centre, then cut into cookies. Crushed Jolly Rancher should be placed in the middle of the cookie. You will get stained glass cookies after 8 minutes of baking and 10 minutes of cooling! For these cookies, silicone mats or parchment paper work well.
Final words
Experimenting with your sugar dough for cookies can yield delightful outcomes that will satisfy everyone, regardless of your preference for a straightforward, traditional cookie or a more intricate, sophisticated version.
